Club News

December was a very busy and most enjoyable month at the Club. In addition to hosting dozens of private Christmas parties, we hosted several Club Events including: the San Felipe 2 Man Golf Championship, a Christmas Shopping Day, the first annual Niños Navideños Christmas Scramble, Breakfast with Santa, and our fabulous New Year’s Eve Celebration.

San Felipe 2-Man Golf Championship: Congratulations to Aaron Welch and Guy Goodspeed, our Club's new 2-Man Golf Champions. The 2-Man Tournament was held on December 5th and 6th. There were 50 golfers in the tournament. The first day was overcast and quite chilly, but the second day was a beautiful day for golf, warm, sunny and no wind. Photographs of the Tournament are posted on our website and a few are printed in this newsletter.

Christmas Shopping Day was held on December 10th. Vendors from Del Rio and Acuña were at our Club showing their specialty Christmas gifts. The event was very well attended by both vendors and Club Members.

Niños Navideños Christmas Scramble: The first annual San Felipe Christmas Scramble was played on Sunday, December 13th. The Christmas Scramble benefits Niños Navideños. All the players had a good time and they raised $440 for Niños Navideños. The team of Eddie Ochoa, David Howard, Pam Wrob, Felix Sauceda, and Antonio Rodriguez won the event with a score of 62. Photographs of the tournament are posted on our website.

Breakfast with Santa: Members and their children ate Breakfast with Santa at the Club on Sunday, December 20th. Santa said that he had a wonderful time meeting and talking to our Club Member’s children. Santa took photographs with each child he met and gave presents to all of them. Santa photographs are posted on our website and prints are available in the club office.

New Year's Eve Celebration: This year’s celebration was the best one ever. Over 110 members joined in the pary. The food was delectable, the decorations were dazzling, the band was exciting and the guests were fantastic. Everyone ate, drank, mingled, danced, made noise and celebrated the new year.

Sunday Brunch: Don’t forget, gourmet brunch is now served every Sunday. This fabulous brunch features a waffle station, an omelet station, salads, hot and cold entrees, including prime rib, many side dishes and desserts. Time: 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Prices: $15.95 per person, $8.95 for children 7 to 12 and free for children under 7.

Open Microphone Night

We are putting out the call again for talent. Our next Open Microphone (Mic) Night will be on January 30, 2010. If you weren't at Open Mic Night then you really missed a fun time. Food, jokes, drinks, songs and lots of laughter filled our dining room as our talented guests filled the night.

Jose Sarduy hosted the evening as well as delivering his own brand of humor. He kept the entertainment rolling as we heard stand-up comics, wonderful guitar and voice duets and lots of karaoke. There is a lot more talent here than you know! Everyone joined in and it was hard to sing because you were laughing too hard. More than 100 people enjoyed the show and the night flew by and ended too soon.

So, on January 30th, for a great time, bring your voices, guitars, comedy, magic, etc., and show off your talent, or just come and enjoy the show. Please contact Ashley Molano or Linda Ramon at 774-2511 with questions or if you wish to perform.

Duplicate Bridge Night

Our first Duplicate Bridge Night will be held on Wednesday, January 27th at 6:30 p.m. You do not have to be an "expert" to participate in Duplicate Bridge Night. Playing duplicate is a good way to become a better player. If you know how to play "rubber" or "party" bridge or if you already know how to play duplicate, please come to the Club and join in on our first Duplicate Bridge Night. Instruction on duplicate bridge will be given before play begins. We are hoping to have at least 10 tables. Anyone needing a partner should attend and every effort will be made to find a partner for you. Salads, sandwiches and snacks will be served. The cost is $6.00 inclusive. Please call Linda Ramon or Ashley Molano at at 774-2511 to make reservations.

From the Pro Shop

Our final two tournaments of the year were played this month and we had a great turn-out for both events. The San Felipe 2-man was played on December 5th and 6th and despite freezing temperatures some really great golf was played. Former Del Rio High School stand outs Guy Goodspeed and Aaron Welch teamed up to win the event with scores of 62 and 63. In our first annual Ninos Navidenos Tournament the team of Eddie Ochoa, David Howard, Pam Wrob, Felix Sauceda, and Antonio Rodriguez won the event with a score of 62. More importantly because of everyone’s participation we were able to raise $440.00 for the Ninos Navidenos organization. Thanks!

Our greens are now completely dormant with the several freezes we have had this month. The result is the brown color they have but they are rolling fast and true. Beto and his crew have trimmed several of the trees on the golf course. If you have not played in the last couple of weeks you will be pleasantly surprised with the tee shot on #2 and #11. I know all the faders and slicers are very happy with the result. The following are this month’s tournament results:

2010 Golf Tournaments

We have a rather diverse schedule planned for this year. We have tried to address the interests of our members. If anyone has an ideas for additional tournaments, please let us know.

The dates of the tournaments are subject to change; however, we do not anticipate any changes. The tournament formats vary from fun to competitive, and gross and net prizes will be awarded in most events.

No matter what level of golf you play, our tournament schedule gives all of our members the chance to compete and win.

The schedule for our 3-Club Tournament (San Felipe, Bentwood and Sonora) has not yet been set. Actually, our 3-Club Tournament may become a 5-Club Tournament, as we are currently discussing this idea with two other clubs. Information about our 3 or 5 Club Tournament will be presented in our next newsletter.

From the Service Director

Well, the big rush is over and it was great! We had lots of parties and it was wonderful to help our members celebrate the season. I hope you had as much fun at your events as we did helping you with them.

A big “thank you” to all of our members who so willingly contributed to the Employee Christmas Bonus Fund. Your generosity made for a joyous time of year for us, as well.

Our lunch buffets are very popular and we will be adding another day in our schedule. Read what Tessie has to say about our dining on the next page.

I am always working to improve our service in any way possible. We want you to feel comfortable here. Please let me know how I can achieve this.

Thank you and Happy New Year

We are planning many activities for 2010, we would like to hear suggestions on what you would like to have here at the club. We are looking forward to this new year, and we know thanks to the members, it will be a great and exciting year.
